How to Start Building Credit History from Scratch
You arrived in the US and learned that credit history is everything. Without it, it's hard to rent an apartment, get a credit card, or even get a job. Good news: you can start right now.
Step 1: Get an SSN or ITIN
First, you need an identification number:
- SSN (Social Security Number) — if you have work authorization
- ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) — if SSN is not available yet
Without one of these numbers, credit bureaus can't create your credit file.
Step 2: Open a Bank Account
A bank account doesn't build credit by itself, but you need it for:
- Paying your credit card
- Demonstrating financial stability
- Using services like Experian Boost
Good options to start: Chase, Bank of America, or online banks like Chime.
Step 3: Get a Secured Credit Card
This is the simplest and most reliable path:
- Choose a card (Discover it Secured, OpenSky, Capital One Secured)
- Make a deposit ($200-500)
- Get a card with a limit equal to your deposit
- Use the card for small purchases
Step 4: Use the Card Correctly
This is the most important part:
- Spend no more than 10-30% of your limit
- Pay the full balance every month
- Set up autopay — a missed payment destroys credit
- Don't close the card — length of history matters
Step 5: Add Additional Tools
After 3-6 months, add:
- Experian Boost — counts utility and subscription payments
- Credit builder loan (Self, MoneyLion) — adds variety to your credit mix
- Authorized user — ask a friend to add you to their card
Step 6: Track Your Progress
Check your score for free:
- Credit Karma — TransUnion and Equifax
- Discover Credit Scorecard — free FICO Score for everyone
- Experian — free account
Timeline: What to Expect
| Period | What Happens |
|---|---|
| 0-3 mo | First score appears (usually 580-650) |
| 3-6 mo | Score grows with proper usage |
| 6-12 mo | Can apply for unsecured card |
| 12-24 mo | Score can reach 700+ |
The Golden Rule
Pay on time. Every month. No exceptions. Payment history is 35% of your score.
