Tax Filing for Immigrants
Filing a tax return is not only a requirement but also an important step in building your financial life in the US.
Why File Taxes?
- It's the law — if you earn income in the US, you must pay taxes
- Getting an ITIN — Form W-7 is filed together with your tax return
- Tax refund — you may get money back (EITC, Child Tax Credit)
- Proof of presence — useful for immigration cases
Connection Between Taxes and Credit
Filing taxes doesn't build credit by itself. But:
- Through ITIN, you gain access to credit products
- Income confirms your ability to pay
- Some lenders request tax documents
Who Must File?
- Anyone earning above a certain threshold ($13,850 for single filers in 2023)
- Self-employed with income over $400
- Those who want to obtain an ITIN
