Tax Filing for Immigrants

Filing a tax return is not only a requirement but also an important step in building your financial life in the US.

Why File Taxes?

  1. It's the law — if you earn income in the US, you must pay taxes
  2. Getting an ITIN — Form W-7 is filed together with your tax return
  3. Tax refund — you may get money back (EITC, Child Tax Credit)
  4. Proof of presence — useful for immigration cases

Connection Between Taxes and Credit

Filing taxes doesn't build credit by itself. But:

  • Through ITIN, you gain access to credit products
  • Income confirms your ability to pay
  • Some lenders request tax documents

Who Must File?

  • Anyone earning above a certain threshold ($13,850 for single filers in 2023)
  • Self-employed with income over $400
  • Those who want to obtain an ITIN
