5 Mistakes That Kill Your Credit History
Many immigrants make the same mistakes. Here are the most common ones — and how to avoid them.
Mistake 1: Missing a Payment
Payment history is 35% of your score. One missed payment can drop your score by 100+ points, and the mark stays on your report for 7 years.
Solution: Set up autopay for the minimum amount. Even if you forget, the minimum payment will go through automatically.
Mistake 2: Using More Than 30% of Your Limit
If you have a card with a $500 limit and spend $400 — your utilization rate is 80%. That's bad.
Solution: Try to use no more than 10-30% of your limit. If the limit is low, pay several times a month.
Mistake 3: Applying for Multiple Cards at Once
Each application creates a hard inquiry, which lowers your score by 5-10 points. Three applications in a month is a red flag.
Solution: Apply for one card at a time. Wait 3-6 months between applications.
Mistake 4: Closing Old Cards
Closing a card reduces your total credit limit (increases utilization) and shortens your average account age.
Solution: Keep old cards open even if you don't use them. Make a small purchase every couple of months.
Mistake 5: Using Only a Debit Card
A debit card does NOT build credit history. Many immigrants use only debit cards for years, thinking they're building credit.
Solution: Get a credit card (even a secured one) as early as possible.
